1. AS THE FALL TOUR SEASON WRAPS UP
The past three months, as is usual for the fall, has been incredibly busy, full of travel, classes and good adventures. In the past
three weeks alone I've been on the road, living in Europe as I taught in Amsterdam, London and Berlin. (Grateful as well for a bit
of a vacation in Athens hanging out with Kumi and crew.) But the time did come when I had to click my heels three times to come home
to my beloved Babylon by the Bay.
International travel has become increasingly cumbersome. The crammed airline passenger loads, tedious security lines, disappearing
amenities, weariness of Americans and US foreign policy, and the general feel of security fatigue have squashed any remnant of the
glamour of jet-set travel. The anemic US Dollar makes overseas travel even less appealing. On top of that, we live in a world where
cars blow up and toys can kill us.
Yet this is precisely the time that we must travel abroad, explore the beaten and not-so-beaten paths, break exotic bread with
remarkable people, walk ancient shores, witness changing regimes and breathe in the perfumes of flowers you've not seen before.
Technology deludes us to believe that we're networked to the world and plugged into the pulse of the globe. In reality, if we choose
to sit back and connect to the world via the screen alone, we're no different then a physician who only scans the representation of a
pulse on the monitor but never engages the patient. The web is a tool, like the heart monitor, which assists with information but it's
no replacement for the actual experience. To understand the world, we must leave the comforts of our habits and assumptions. We must
find ourselves freshly uncomfortable among alien tongues and feel victory in efforts of the simplest communications. Mindful travel
shatters arrogance of ignorance. In being befriended by extraordinary ordinary people we mutually experience humility, gratitude, then
compassion leading to empathy. These are all medicine fatal to the conditions of hatred, anger, apathy and disdain - of which the world
suffers far too much of today.
It's estimated that less then 20% of Americans have a passport. Of these, few travel abroad more then once or twice. Yet we live in a
world where increasingly foreign affairs immediately become domestic concerns. The world is changing, the pulse is changing - maybe we
could stand to participate.
Just a few bits of thought on travel, as I settle down to enjoy my much neglected but wonderful home. Only after her whirlwind tour of
Oz could Dorothy could genuinely say…
"There's no place like home."
Wishing you peace and joy
